A Gift of Warmth

A-Z Farm now offers a product that could become a useful and warm family heirloom for many years to come, a custom-made wool blanket.  Wool is a natural product of sheep and one of the oldest fibers used by mankind.  Its natural characteristics contribute to the warmth of the blanket.

The wool for your blanket willBlanket with red stripes come from the sheep at A-Z Farm.  We strive to produce a high quality wool crop by managing our sheep on a pasture program.  The sheep are shorn once a year before lambing.  The wool is sent to the family owned and operated MacAusland's Woollen Mills on Prince Edward Island in Canada.  This quaint and proud family business has become known as the producer of the high quality 100% pure virgin wool MacAusland Blanket.

The making of the blanket begins with washing the raw wool, which is dried and picked to remove grit and open up the fibers.  The clean wool is then carded (combed), and spun into thread.  The thread is warped (woven on a loom), fulled (preshrunk),  washed again and dyed.  Finally the woven wool is dried, brushed to make it fluffy and warm, cut into blankets, hemmed and folded.  The resulting blanket is warm, soft yet durable and beautiful.

Blankets can be made into a wide variety of colors and tweeds:

Solid Colors - Red, Royal Blue, Teal, Light Pink, Maroon, Fushia, Light Blue, and Kelley Green.

Tweeds - Black, Mauve, Fawn, Royal Blue, Olive Green, Fushia, Kelley Green, Light Blue, Brown, Pink, Purple, Peach, Dark Rust, Red, Teal, Light Rust, Dark Green, Maroon, Navy, Turquoise, Yellow, Green Heather, Green Tweed, Blue Heather, Blue Tweed, Rose Tweed.

It is recommended to dry clean woolens before storage.  Storing clean woolens is the best protection from moth damage since the insects are attracted to soil and stains.

Our A-Z Farm is a family operation specializing in grass fed lamb and wool produced without the use of hormones, growth stimulants or antibiotics.  Freezer lambs (whole or half), sheep pelts, wool for spinning, weaving, crafts and blankets are available.
